Three ways in which technology may will affect the Audio Industry over the next few years.
Software in the Cloud
Cloud computers can be specifically designed to run software at much higher speeds than your personal computer can. In the future, your own computer will just provide access to the software platform. The software itself will actually run on a bespoke cloud-based machine, that has been specifically designed to very efficiently run that specific software. In much the same way as cloud-based document editors work now.
Smart Contracts
Smart Contacts and Non-Fungible Tokens (NFTs) will ultimately replace systems such as iLok. This will allow bespoke and individually tailored access to software features. Some companies may even allow the resale of their Licensing NFTs. Also providing the infrastructure for subscription payments directly through the blockchain. I suspect royalties on all digital music files will eventually be paid using a blockchain-style system.
Artificial Intelligence
The exponential growth of natural language A.I. over the next few years will enable the intuitive implication of voice-controlled Artificial Intelligence within software applications. Being able to ask “Create my usual set-up for bass guitar” would result in a new record-ready track, with your usual plugins and routing ready to go. Eventually, sections such as the intro, verse, and chorus will automatically be recognised and labeled. With repeated use, the A.I. will learn your working methodology and become more personally integrated with your own approaches and sound.
Future predictions aren’t always accurate and these are just three areas that are being developed currently.
